Week 12 Chela

I couldn't decide what to put up this fortnight, Ive been working on some other stuff but nothing I'm ready to share. I had a trip to Italy to visit one of my gorgeous sisters and thought I might be channeling gondolas of Venice, gelati colours or something exotic for y'all. Nope - but I do have some colour studies for you. I'm trying to create water colour designs from flat CAD artwork.

I finally got out the painting table and spent a lovely Sunday drinking good coffee, eating scrambled eggs and painting like a 3 year old - it has been a while.

I then messed around in Photoshop to create this tile repeat. Im loving folktronica.

I drew a picture of Roy Orbison and like to call it 'Orbison Sunrise' Recently I've been quite taken by this...............

I have many fond memories of the circus but none half as crazy as going to see a circus in Bohdgaya, India. I was completely speechless as motorcyclists climbed the "wall of death" (or the more friendly sounding "circle of death"), snatching rupees from the hands of spectators as they passed by. Here is a Youtube clip I found that goes some way to describing the sheer awesomeness of these performers, minus 2 year olds and vehicle swapping halfway round the track.

If you are interested in Indian circus here is a magnificent photo by Mary Ellen Mark from her series on Indian circus'. I cant wait to get my hands on the book, it is such a beautiful glimpse into the life of these performers.

For this piece I was inspired by so many things Indian circus, Sita Sings the Blues, linocuts and yes im still on a Russian tattoo bent! I feel like there is so much inspiring material to work with here. This first image doesn't even begin to express the possibilities but I like where its heading. click on the image to make BIG.

I think we're both feeling a bit flighty because for you all I have an illustration of a peacock! I'm not sure why I drew a peacock, it's pretty? I'm excited about this style of illustration and am looking forward to pursuing it. Stay tuned!

Still on a bird tangent............

I think it is best to never go into a bead store unless you have a project in mind. I could literally have spent hours in beadland but lucky(?) for me my lunch break is finite. So, one hour and more money than i'd like to mention later I came out with a few yards of chain, some links and a wad of rooster feathers. What was I thinking??

Truth be told we actually created the first pieces 4 weeks before posting (the secret was killing me). It then took another 2 weeks to get onto creating the blog. So here is week 4, seemingly early but what is time and space anyway? That's right folks, just an abstract concept.
Lately I have been obsessing over tattoo art books, particularly the series of III encyclopedias put out by Fuel Publishing. This got me thinking of doves and has driven me to punch holes in things with a sharp metal object.

This is the first volume and alas alak maybe the one that got away. It is out of print but if anyone has one that needs a new home let me know and it can shack up with volumes II and III

I used a double sided glass frame to display this "punched paper" dove. It looks beautiful in the window and next to a lamp at night *note to self: bring artwork to store next time so you get the right size frame!

This is a detail of the "punched paper". The texture reminds me of sea urchins.

When I was younger one of my prized possessions was a colouring-in book of Islamic geometric patterns (thanks Mum). I think this is one of my earliest experiences of working on pattern repeats

Inspired by this memory, a 72 set of Derwents and the imminent arrival of Spring I set forth to create my own "Pixel Kaleidescope" designs. I think they will look great once applied to some Melamine plates via Freddy and Ma

Summer BBQ's just started looking brighter, if that was possible. If you want to check out more of these designs I will have them up on my website soon.

A little introduction

Once upon a time in New York City two Australian expats discovered two things: each other and the fact that they were both creatively frustrated. Over brunch at a momentarily forgettable cafe the stars, planets, oceans, tides and turtles aligned and the idea for this blog was conceived.

Being a bit lazy and rusty, we needed an incentive to get the creative juices flowing again. We set ourselves the task of completing a piece of work every two weeks. It could be small, large, awesome or atrocious as long as it kept us making.

So here we have 2x2 for you, two people every two weeks. Share the journey with us if you're inclined. We're excited!
